MK:U

Milton Keynes University Milton Keynes, UK 2019 INVITED COMPETITION Galmstrup Ltd. was invited to join OMAs team for the new Milton Keynes University (MKU) as the "Social Infrastructure Engineers". Our approach was that the new MKU should become a vehicle for weaving an intangible new learning grid into the existing Milton Keynes grid. Innovation often happens when people from different disciplines meet and share ideas. Our main objective was to create a setting for informal conversations and co-creation at a new-build campus. Our outset was to collect stakeholder voices and define intersections. We suggested to physically occupy the vacant Lloyds building together with a group of master students from Cranfield University, The Open University and young professionals from within Milton Keynes. Together we would “hack” into the existing social grid of Milton Keynes to get to understand its “off grid” qualities and dynamics better. We would infiltrate the grid, collect voices from residents at the library as well as the mall, train station and neighbouring living cluster Oldbrook, and strengthen innovation through various densifications of the grid. Collaborators: OMA, Buro Happold, Carmody Groarke, Nicholas Hare Architects, PLANIT-IE
