The refurbishment included a full interior fit-out including opening up spaces, and restoring walls, floors and installing new colourful bespoke kitchen and storage cabinets, alongside opening up, installing glass partitioning to create an open work environment.
Added Value
We needed the building to work effectively for our business model. The retrofit of this building has been invaluable to the operation of our practice. It is a very comfortable space to work in. Our space to work together functions well alongside the enclosed space that we have made for private meetings. Our proposal brings parts of the castle, that have not been used in many years, back into use. It also reinvigorates the whole area, setting a roadmap for other interventions that would help the Castle’s business case.
Retrofit & Sustainability
The existing brick building has a lovely character and material quality. We wanted to get the right balance of retaining this while making the building more comfortable to work in. The refurbishment included a full interior fit-out including opening up spaces, and restoring walls, floors and installing new colourful bespoke kitchen and storage cabinets and installing glazed screens to create an open work environment.
Context
The building is in a vibrant area of Tower Hamlets, within the Jesus Hospital Estate Conservation Area. The area is predominantly two storeys with few buildings three or more storeys. The building is accessed from a private mews courtyard.
